Things to Consider When Buying A Retractable Awning

Retractable awnings are becoming very popular - whether for environmental responsibility or for the ultimate backyard hang out, people are realizing that awnings provide the best in stylish comfort that saves money on energy.

Price, Quality and/or Style

There has been massive growth in the retractable awning industry and many companies are bidding for your business. There are three primary categories you will find awning companies selling under: Price, Quality and Style. A company like Sunsetter provides a very cost effective yet good quality awning. However, there are few options in size and materials. But for someone who needs an entry-level awning, they are perfect. On the other hand, Eclipse awnings, Nuimage, Alutex, Sunesta, Sunair and Durasol offer a greater range of choices. Don't be tempted by price alone, there is a lot more to an awning than just a price. Just like any other product or service, you get what you pay for. So be sure to use the very best materials and to make sure you get the appropriate awning that meets your needs and budget.

What’s the difference between awning brands?

Retractable Awnings companies distinguish themselves with unique features on their awning models. They all offer something that is special and equally as important, so it becomes a bit challenging to know whose awning really is better. The most important question to answer is which awning is best for you. And a knowledgeble salesperson, or awning dealer, can really help you figure this out.

Does it matter where the awning is manufactured?

There are three regions worldwide today that produce retractable awning components. The best retractable awning components are manufactured in Europe. Good quality awnings are produced in the United States and low budget awnings generally come out of China. It is common for many companies to import awning components from Europe and assemble them locally in the USA.

Europe has been using awnings for such a long time that they are woven directly into the architectural landscape. Therefore Europeans have very high standards which result in the highest quality and most innovative awnings in the marketplace.

Warning: The Very Low End

There are some manufacturers selling residential awnings for low very low prices. These awnings are produced in China and unfortunately end up costing consumers more than they bargained for in extra aggravation. It is vitally important to have a strong awning, especially for the larger decks commonly found in the USA. I can't speak for everyone, but if I am going to sit under a several hundred pound awning with my friends and family, I want to make sure it is strong and well installed.

Price is only issue

Choosing the Retractable Awning that is best for you

However, it is not always necessary to have a high-end super-durable retractable awning. In many cases it is okay to use an entry-level awning especially if it is all your budget can afford. But even though you need a low-priced entry-level awning, it is still important to buy an awning that is good quality. It is also important to buy your awning from a reputable company that will help resolve any problems you may have down the road.

When deciding on the right awning for you, make sure you think about how long you expect to have the awning. A low end awning might cost less initially, but if it lasts 1/4 as long and 1/2 as well, then a higher-end model might actually cost you a lot less money and a lot less aggravation over time.

European high-end retractable awnings typically have 10 year or longer warranties, whereas low end lines have only 5 years or less.

The stronger awnings have much greater sizes to choose form ranging from 60' in width to 18' feet in projection. Budget awnings are generally limited to 18' in width and 10' in projection.

Better retractable awnings use Sunbrella awning fabrics by Glen Raven Mills company. These materials are made from 100% solution-dyed acrylic resin that are designed to breath and not trap heat while also allowing you to stay dry. Cheap awnings use plastics that heat up and trap heat and are not nearly as stylish as the Sunbrella fabric colors and patterns.
